I hope that you are keeping well. It was great seeing you present today at the EU-Canada workshop on EDI and AI and I would have loved to get the 30 minute version of that talk! Which actually brings me to the reason I’m reaching out today (apart from congratulating you on your very stimulating presentation).

On behalf of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research’s Institute of Population and Public Health (CIHR-IPPH), I am writing to invite you to be a speaker at a virtual symposium that we are co-hosting with Wellcome UK, CIFAR as well as CIHR’s Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (CIHR-ICRH) and the Institute of Indigenous Peoples’ Health (CIHR-IIPH) focused on the “Ethical, Social and Political Challenges of Using Artificial Intelligence in Health”. The virtual symposium will be held on May 17-21, 2021, with daily sessions planned between 11am-1pm ET /4-6pm BST/8-10am PT/10am-12pm CT/ to accommodate for time zone differences.

This is the second of two symposiums that we are hosting as part of a joint funding opportunity we launched in 2018 with Wellcome UK focused on building capacity in AI, health and equity research. The overall objective of this symposium is to bring together an international cohort of multi-disciplinary researchers with a mutual interest in furthering our understanding on the societal and health implications of AI. We recognize the value of health researchers collaborating with experts in artificial intelligence and computational sciences, social sciences and ethics, which is why this symposium will bring together scientists from a variety of disciplines.

Through this event, our objectives are to:
1.     Facilitate knowledge exchange related to research on the ethical, social and political challenges of using AI in health;
2.     Advance dialogue on the applications and use of evidence derived from AI approaches for health policies, practice and decision-making, and outline international levers for change; and
3.     Create space to nurture international research collaborations and a community of practice on the ethical, social and political impacts of AI in health.

We would love for you to give one of two 15-minute talks on Tuesday May 18th.   Please see below for the breakdown of themes by day.

Symposium sessions: May 17-21, 2021, daily from 11 am - 1 pm ET

Proposed topics:

  *   Day 1 - Monday, May 17, 2021: Focus on sharing research and knowledge exchange (largely grantee presentations)
  *   Day 2 - Tuesday, May 18, 2021: Focus on equity, applications and use, and policy
  *   Day 3 - Wednesday, May 19, 2021: Focus on international collaboration
  *   Day 4 - Thursday, May 20, 2021: Ethics with urgency and implementing AI in the health system
  *   Day 5 - Friday, May 21, 2021: Where is Ethical AI & Health headed?
