Subject: Invitation to speak at FAccT conference March 5th

Dear Jutta,

I hope you’re well! I’m writing with an invitation.

We’ve just been accepted to host a workshop at the FAccT conference on fairness in machine learning<https://can01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ffacctconference.org%2F2021%2F&data=04%7C01%7Cjtreviranus%40ocadu.ca%7Cbee29b6378c447856df708d8d393a08e%7C06e469d12d2a468fae9b7df0968eb6d7%7C0%7C0%7C637491982023910293%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=WtBvzDT9vjDPb82sW6ZJKWY37QO%2F0CEQTm0f7FUxapU%3D&reserved=0>, which is coming up the week of March 3rd. Our workshop will focus on the challenges of auditing for disability bias — trying to engage more members of the technical community to focus on these questions, and some of the unique challenges you’ve written about.

I’m attaching the workshop proposal here. We would absolutely love to include you as a featured speaker, presenting for ~10 minutes during the opening to tee up the issues for conversation. You would be joined by Lydia Brown from CDT, and hopefully by Solon Barocas, who serves as an advisor for CDT’s work on these issues. The workshop proposal has more detail on the types of questions we’re trying to focus on in the conversation.

The audience will be technical, policy and company folks who work on AI fairness research. One of our major goals is to have more researchers in this community consider disability and intersectional issues, which so frequently get overlooked.

One catch to my invitation is time zone: since this is an international conference, our session has been scheduled for Friday March 5th from 7-8.30 a.m. East Coast / Toronto time. So it’s a very early start. I’m hoping that won’t dissuade you, and you will still be interested in joining!

Please let me know if this appeals. I’d be very happy to jump on the phone to talk more.

Thank you!

Alex
